The cold has settled back after one day of a teasingly warm 40 degrees! I keep hearing rumors of more snow, but since I keep forgetting to check the weather on the computer, I have no idea if the rumors are even true. Spring must be coming soon? Groundhog's Day is a mere week away!
Our firewood supply had been dwindling since Sam hurt his back and I had split what I could. Thankfully we have been blessed with borrowing a friend's log splitter. With the girls dragging the chunks from the woods on sleds, we have refilled the woodshed with enough wood to last a few more weeks.
Tonight's dinner is Chicken with dumplings and then Sam and I are off on a romantic date: we're going food shopping at Wal-mart in Lisbon. I tell 'ya, we sure know how to have a good time! We might splurge and split a vanilla chai from Dunkin Donuts!
Sam has his appointment with the specialist for his back on Thursday. Hopefully then he will get the okay to go back to work. In some ways it will be nice to get back to a normal schedule. Whatever that is?
This is my journal about my life as a wife, a mom, a grandma, a retired farmer, former foster parent, retired homeschooler, and current house parent. Join me on my journey.

So Cold!
It is still bitter cold here. The thermometer read -13 degrees at 5:30 AM this morning! So far all the animals, but one laying hen, have survived the cold. It supposed to be warmer today, but that is because snow should be arriving!
Rachel turns 9 today. We have some friends coming over for pizza, cake and ice skating. Sam is going to build a small fire out by the "pond" so the kids can warm up a little. I figure the moms and little ones will stay inside where it is warm and make hot cocoa for everyone!
Rachel is very excited about her birthday. She loves being the center of attention and a birthday is custom made for that! I made her a dress out of fabric with horses on it and a dress of the same material for her doll. SHe loves dressing her doll in clothes that match hers. Every night her doll gets changed into pajamas that match and laid into her cradle. Rachel will be a wonderful mother someday.

More Snow
Another snowstorm. This time predictions of 5-10 inches before morning. The weather forecasters are already discussing the next two storms: one on Tuesday and then another late Wednesday into Thursday. I suppose the snow is better than the ice we had last week. We STILL can't walk across the yard from the ice!
Our supplies for making maple syrup arrived in the mail, so it must be nearly Spring, right? I ordered three colonies of bees, and more jars with lids for storing all this sticky stuff!
The girls are enjoying skating on our "pond". Calling it a pond is definitely an exaggeration as it is only about 10 feet by 20 feet and a mere 2-3 feet deep at it's deepest. At least it freezes quickly and getting there is a lot easier than getting up to the town green.
Rachel's birthday is a week away. She's invited two families to come and celebrate with us. There will be lots of kids since one of the families has 11 children and the other (of course, it's best friend Grace's family) has 4 kids. We'll order a party pizza from Big Y and I'll make a cake. Rachel's plan is to go out to the "pond" and have Sam build a bonfire while everyone skates. I hope the weather will cooperate. It looks that at the very least, it will be cold enough for the water to be quite frozen.
