It's gearing up to be a busy weekend!
Abby comes home from camp tonight. I can't wait to hear all about it! Rachel and Samantha are eager for her to return to her chores! While we missed her around here, it was good to see Hannah and Samantha take up the slack. It was a reminder for all of us that in a year Abby will be preparing to go off to college!
The horse will go to her new home this weekend. She is going to a great place where she will live out the rest of her years in luxury.
This weekend is also the North Stonington Fair. I am still getting last minute entries for the goat show, and we are up to 90 goats! The weather looks promising for a sunny and hot day. I think we are all up for it. We will be doing last minute clipping tomorrow since Abby took ALL the clippers with her to camp this week!
Last year we tried something new at the goat show that everyone enjoyed, so we are doing it again. We called it "the community table". We provide the cups, napkins, gallons of cold lemonade, chips, veggies and dips. All the showman (and attached parents) are invite to partake. This allows for us to run the show continuously, without breaking for lunch. With the numbers of goats and the show starting at 9AM, we still won't finish up until around 4PM!

Getting Ready!
We are getting ready for so many things around here!
We are getting ready for shipping the young bucklings and all but twelve of the chickens to the livestock auction. We are collecting crates from grocery stores for the chickens. Sam is building a crate for the back of the pick up truck for the goats.
We are getting ready for our "health check" visit from our veterinarian. We are checking goats for parasites and treating if we find them. We are cleaning the yard, the pens, and the barns. Today we hauled 230 pounds of scrap metal and 80 pounds of scrap aluminum to the recycling facility!
We are getting ready for Linear Appraisal. This is when the American Dairy Goat Association sends out an "appraiser". He will look over our goats and assign them a score for how well they meet the breed standard. This year we are hosting, so we are preparing our fences and pens for the extra goats that will be coming. We are also checking tattoos to make sure they are readable and getting all the babies tattooed.
We are also getting ready for fair season. Our first show is in New York at the end of May. We are clipping goat feet and making sure all of our paperwork is in order. We are also doing the prep work on the camper and getting it ready for travel.
It is looking like it is going to be a fun filled summer, with shows, fairs, family gatherings, and 4-H events!

June!
I can NOT believe that June is just about here! Already nearly every weekend in June on my calendar has something written on it! Teen fellowship for the two older girls, baptism for Hannah, 4-H community service activities, Linear Appraisal for our herd, vet checks to get done before Fair Season... FAIR SEASON!!! ACK!
Fair season is such a busy time. We have cut some of the smaller fairs from our plans but have added a few bigger ones. Thankfully this has taken some of the pressure off of the month of August! We have three shows in July, one in August, three in September, and three in October.
In order for Abby to be eligible to compete at the Big E she needs to compete at a local 4-H fair. So, there is one more in August, but only Abby is showing at that one. It is a 4-H fair in another county. She is showing there because she will be at camp the weekend of the 4-H fair in our county. This fair will be relaxing as it is just up the road from my parent's house (where my brother and sister-in-law are now living). We can relax by the pool, sipping lemonade, after a long day at the fair. Who needs Disneyland vacations???
(Oh! and for those of you wondering about Sam's Lieutenant's test, the rumor is the list will be out on Tuesday June 2.)

Ahh! Normalcy Returns
Yesterday we said a hurried "Goodbye!" to my sister and her kids. They are promising to return in a few weeks to stay for a real visit that doesn't involve faulty landing gear on airplanes and emergency landings.
Today is the first "normal" day of Summer vacation since, well, the start of Summer vacation! Today's schedule involves a dump run, library trip, and a drive to go and pick up our clipper blades that were sharpened. This afternoon I'll be tattooing a 4H-er's goats. I will attempt to get the literal MOUNTAIN of laundry throught the washer and onto the clothesline. One load per day just doesn't cut it around here!
We are now one week away from the 4-H fair, so "normal" is only going to last so long. We have narrowed down the number of fairs we will be going to because gas is now worth more than gold...

A Quiet Week?????
Whenever anyone heard that all 4 older girls were going to camp, they almost always said something about Sam and I having a quiet week.... Not exactly how it turned out.
Yesterday I finished grouting the tile in the bathroom. It looks MAAAHHHVELOUS! I can't wait til Saturday when the shower, sink and toilet all go in! To save money we have opted to keep the same toilet until we can afford a new one. So the beige toilet won't quite match the other white fixtures.
Sam and I borrowed the two Jones boys for a few hours yesterday to get all the furniture into all the right rooms and assembled: 3 Bunk bed sets (unassembled and then reassembled), one queen size bed, and 4 bureaus.
Today I will be sorting through the "stuff" in Abby's and Nathalie's room. I finished Hannah's "stuff" yesterday. As soon as their room is settled, then I can organize Rachel's and Samantha's. My children are all voracious pack-rats! Every scrap of paper, note, school work, bookmark, craft project... has been saved. I am trying to be sensitive to what is important to them...
The girls come home from camp this evening. Weather wise they have had a good week: Sunny days with the occasional thunderstorm. I can't wait to have them home again and I know they will have lots to tell us!
Tomorrow my sister, Emily, is getting married. The wedding is taking place in Kansas, and though we were all invited, we just couldn't afford the gas to get there. God had a plan though, cause Sam never would have been able to make the trip with his back the way it is. We all really like Kevin, and have warned Em that she could be the one "voted from the island", and we'll keep Kevin.
My parents are bringing my nieces (Sarah's two oldest), Elizabeth and Claudia, back with them from Kansas. They will be spending a week with us getting ready to show goats and chickens at the North Stonington Fair . My cousin, Tiana, who is about the same age as Hannah, is coming on the 10th. She also will be staying with us to show goats and chickens.
We have picked a date for our 5th Annual Campfire under the Stars! I have had several people asking me about it, so we have started planning it for AUGUST 15th! Invitations should be hitting the mailboxes on Monday. We are having an "Olympics" theme this year, with the older girls planning/running all the "events".
Since summer vacation officially started we have yet to have a "quiet week". And it looks like it'll be a while before we do!

Fair Season
Back in to the swing of school again. Nathalie has taken up a photography course. The child actually has a talent in this. The course is a 4H course with curriculum books that have instructions and projects to complete. She is excited about doing the whole course and entering it in the 4H Fair. SHe figures she'll take her best shots and enter them at all the other fairs we are going to. I figure the premium money might come close to covering the cost of the photo paper and ink.
Speaking of fairs... It is amazing to me how quickly "fair season" will be upon us! Here are the fairs that we are planning on attending (So far. This list is subject to change.)

One more Job!
Sam and I have been asked to superintend the Ledyard Fair's Goat show. So our weekend in September which we had no shows planned (because we were not going to attend the Hebron Fair this year), has been filled.
It will be a small show and the premiums won't be huge. Being its first year, the competition should be light though, so those who compete will definitely win something. Also being so close, the gas to drive there won't be astronomical.
Sam and I are superintending 3 shows this fair season: North Stonington, New London 4H Expo, and Ledyard. We need to find judges for each of these shows. We have some names to work with but goat judges are hard to come by around here.
