Promotion

I was offered a promotion at my job two days ago and yesterday I accepted the position. I am now the Assistant Director at the day care. While it does come with a pay raise and an increase in responsibilities, my hours will remain the same.

With this increase and the increase in hours at Tractor Supply (Spring rush) for Sam, we will begin to make an even bigger dent in our bills. It is feeling so good to actually sock a little money away each month in our savings account again.

The hope is to pay off our two big debts as quickly as possible while still putting some money aside to replace Sam's car. His car is a '97 and is still running quite well, but with it approaching 200,000 miles we suspect the end is near and that it will probably be in some spectacular fashion!

Results Are In

Sam saw the Orthopedic doctor yesterday morning. The doctor has put Sam on "light duty" and ordered an MRI of his back. The orthopedist wants to be sure there isn't any "real" damage to the back before sending Sam back to full duty. The concern is that this is the second time in less than 6 months that Sam injured his back and this last time involved significant numbness in his leg and foot.

So while we wait for Workmen's Comp to approve, order, and get an appointment for the MRI, Sam will be on "light duty" at the firehouse. This unfortunately means he will be driving to Waterbury every day, Monday through Friday, and sitting in the Chief's office for eight hours. Sam expects to become an expert thumb twiddler in that time.

This schedule is going to be difficult to contend with. He'll be leaving the house at 7AM and getting home about 5PM. With my new job, it's going to be tricky to coordinate things. Thankfully, Phyllis has graciously agreed to let me drop Rachel and Samantha off at her house, in their pj's, on the one morning that I have to be at work at 7AM. Sam and I will be sitting down this afternoon to figure out who goes where, at what time, with which parent.

The good side is that Sam can now return to Tractor Supply. Because of the light duty hours, he will only be able to work on Saturdays. At least this gets him back on the job and into the schedule rotation there.

Sam has an interview today for a job with 4H. It is a temporary position until the end of September. It may be extended if 4H can secure another grant or other type of funding. It seems like a really neat job and I am really hopeful that Sam is accepted for the position.

New Job

I start my new job today... I am excited and apprehensive. It has been MANY years since I had a "real" job with a paycheck attached to it. This job is a good thing: money to cover bills, adult interaction, out of the house, etc.

After much discussion about homeschool, we decided to keep the three older girls schooled at home. The main discussion centered around Nathalie. She would like to go to the public school; mainly to be with her friends. Nathalie's personality is one which tends to do the least possible she can get away with and she does not work hard unless pushed (shoved!). Sam and I both suspect that because she is polite and well behaved, she will simply skate through public school without any effort. I will be working only one morning per week (+ 2 afternoons), so the majority of the time she will have me pushing her to work harder. Abby and Hannah both begged to not be put in public school.

Sam is still out of work. It appears he will be until at least the 29th, when he sees an orthopedist. The physical therapy seems to be helping and last session they did some tests which determined, that with continued treatment, he will get the feeling back in his foot and lower leg. Now that he and I have gotten a taste of what his retirement will be like, he is not allowed to retire... ever.

I love the man, and I love that he loves me and wants to be with me, but when I am in the middle of something, (sewing a complicated Romantic Era blouse for the first time) it is frustrating to have someone come up behind me and rub my back for a minute (or touch my head, or rub my arm, or say, "Hey, I was thinking...") and then walk away, only to return 5 minutes later and do the same thing!

I know if he were feeling 100% he would be doing something: cutting firewood, building shelves in my mudroom, cleaning the garage, changing the fuel filter on the car.... but he isn't, so he can't. He is studying for the Lieutenant's test that is coming up at the fire department, but that only occupies a small portion of his day.

So this job thing for me, is a good thing...

Good news

Good news: Rachel's hearing test came back fine. Today she goes to the speech/language expert.

More good news: Sam got the job at Tractor Supply!! The pay is minimun wage, but better than the nothing he has been getting for the last 6 months! He will start in about 2 weeks.

Good news: Abby made me breakfast yesterday morning: bacon, french toast and coffee. The good news part? The house is still standing!

Good news: All 4H'ers are done with kidding! Until February 2009 anyway..

Good news: I am selling eggs like crazy and we are actually paying for the feed with some profit left over every week!
