A cloudy and chilly day, so we yet again, put on our sweatshirts! I left for work and the girls took care of the animals and ate breakfast. When I got home we made lists for for food for this weekend. We sorted through the show shoes pile. Only Samantha needs shoes! Yay!
Our copies of the New London Day's "Sound and Country" magazine for Summer 2009 arrived. We had requested them after my mother-in-law called us up to tell us that Samantha's picture was in it. Twice! At last year's North Stonington goat show a reporter had taken pictures and Samantha's picture was in the regular paper then. They used two more pictures of her showing the Ski's goat (Fuzza McPea) in the current "Sound and Country" issue's article about the fair. Very cool!
Around 2:30 we started our animal chores so we could run the chickens up to the North Stonington Fair. After dropping off the chickens we swung by the Ski's for grain and a quick chat, and then headed off to the Teen Challenge. It was the last night and I think everyone had a lot of fun! They even let the little kids play a round of tug of war!
We arrived home around 9:45PM. The teens took showers while the little ones settled into the camper to sleep.
Today we will be clipping goats, grocery shopping and shoe shopping for Samantha. Sam is coming home this morning and he and the big girls will also be rearranging the chicken pens while the majority of the chickens are at the fair. Maybe we'll get some fence up too!
This is my journal about my life as a wife, a mom, a grandma, a retired farmer, former foster parent, retired homeschooler, and current house parent. Join me on my journey.

Camp Smith Part 2: Day Three
Another beautiful day! Given the summer we have had so far, I couldn't ask for better weather! Sun, big puffy clouds, a slight breeze. Perfect!
While I went to work Sam took Elizabeth, Jenny, and Nathalie (and Turk, the dog) to the 4-H Dog Showing Clinic. There they all learned the right way to show a dog for showmanship classes. They also got to walk through the museum at Blue Slope Farm.
After we all returned home, Sam got a call form his mom, asking him to come and help them put up some new fence. The donkeys have been escaping and they found another place where the 35+ year old fencing had given way. So Sam left for Waterford by himself while Abby made a paper mache submarine and the other girls all worked on posters for the Teen Challenge.
I finished sewing the two dresses for Rachel and Samantha that had been sitting on my sewing machine for about a month. After creating their masterpieces, several of the girls donned bathing suits and went out to wash chickens for the fair this weekend. Abby and Nathalie worked on rounding up all the show clothes and making sure we had enough for the cousins too. I think the only thing we made need to buy is show shoes! Nathalie also filled the library bag with books that needed to go back.
Once the animals were taken care of we headed up to the library. Sam dropped us off there and went on to pick up our old green trailer. For this weekend we are borrowing it back from the people to whom we sold it. We are so grateful that they are willing to let us borrow it! We checked out a ton of books and movies from the library and took a walk over to the Lebanon Farmer's market. We checked out the few booths that were there and I managed to scrounge up $2 to buy eight honey sticks for the girls. It was perfect timing as Sam then drove up in the van with the trailer and we headed off for Teen Challenge!
I had nursery duty last night, but Sam was there to help out with all the kids. From the chatter in the van on the way home, everyone had a good time!
For day four, we will wash and clip goats, clean crates, deliver chickens to the fair, and maybe mow the lawn.

Camp Smith Part 2: Day Two
More rain. Here it is the start of July, when we should be sweltering despite our air conditioners doing the best they can. Instead, we are wearing sweatshirts and slogging through inches of mud.
I left for work before bodies were even stirring. Sam got them going, fed them breakfast, and after animals were taken care of, they started working on putting in fence posts for yet another pasture. (On a side note: our last test on our goats showed them to be healthy!!) Claudia, Elizabeth and Jenny, jumped willingly and eagerly into the task at hand.
When I got home from work, we continued our fencepost work until the thunder indicated the storms were coming fast. And since we were working under tall trees and holding tall metal t-posts, well, you do the math...
Sam took Jenny, Nathalie and Elizabeth with him for Minnie's (the dog) trip to the vet. The other girls watched the beginning of The Princess Bride before it was time to start on the animal chores. Once everything was completed and everyone was home from the vet, we headed off to Joann's fabric store. There we purchased a bulk package of embroidery floss for everyone to share. They are all teaching each other how to make friendship bracelets. I had a coupon for 40% off of one item so we also purchased a small booklet that shows how to make lots of different kinds of bracelet designs.
Then we headed to the Teen Challenge at church. Abby, Nathalie, and Jenny participated while the others made their bracelets and helped the adults to set up the food. The lightning and thunder were particularly intense and so the schedule for the food changed. Claudia, Elizabeth, Rachel, Samantha, and Hannah were wonderful helpers who jumped right into the scramble to get things set up!
We headed home to warm showers and beds around 9:15PM. Day three starts today!

Camp Smith Part 2: Day One
After such a beautiful weekend we were thrilled to have yet another sunny day dawn! Everyone got up early, including the two cousins from Kansas, and helped to get the animals taken care of quickly. At 7:15 AM, we packed the van and headed for the Boston Science Museum. The kids stopped asking how much longer after we made them calculate rate times time equals distance problems every time they asked! School in the summer! Shocking!
At the museum we hit the Science in the Park exhibit first, before any of the school groups showed up. It was then on to the engineering exhibit where the girls designed and built trophies for balls. Rachel and Sam were a team and they managed to build a large trophy that supported a tennis ball, a baseball, and a basketball! Hannah and Claudia's trophy also supported the baseball, but was shorter than Rachel's. Abby and Samantha built a sturdy structure that supported all the balls: tennis, baseball, basketball, soccer ball, and the bowling ball!! We checked 4 hours later and while Rachel's trophy height had been surpassed for the smaller balls, Abby's trophy was still the tallest to support the bowling ball! Nathalie and Elizabeth were unable to support any balls with their structure, but they had fun trying it!
Next we met up with my brother Tom, his wife and their girls. Very soon after, my cousin Peggy (sorry, but you will always be Peggy in my mind...) and her son and daughter joined us and we went to check out the Black Hole and Crittercam exhibits. By 2PM we were back on the road for home since Sam had to work at Tractor Supply and we had to take care of the animals before going to the Teen Challenge.
Teen Challenge was a blast. Nathalie's friend Jenny is staying here all week so she can attend also. The teens play some rough and rowdy games before eating large quantities of food, playing a trivia game, and hearing an evangelist speak. The pterodactyl-skeeters were out in full force, making us a very slap-happy group!
